Everyone has been in this situation. The snow's falling, Bing Crosby's on the stereo and hot cocoa is on the stove. They pull out their annual box of Christmas decorations, only to uncover a tangled mess of Christmas lights...sigh. Well, during this Christmas season, why don't we all celebrate our misery in unison by whipping up a batch of these Tangled Christmas Lights Cupcakes and have a good laugh about the whole thing.
These are so quick and simple to make, it's crazy. You can use store bought cake mix and icing to make things go really fast, or if you prefer homemade, (I know we do), try our Classic Chocolate Cake Recipe or our Vanilla Cake Recipe to get the party started. We like to top our cupcakes with Brenda's Bakery Buttercream for a sweet fluffy finish.
Once the cupcakes are baked and smeared with icing, just top them with black string licorice (we bought ours here) and place our Christmas Light Sugar Dec-On premade edible decorations to finish. Boom, now they're done in a flash...actually quicker than untangling Christmas Lights.
RECIPE NOTES: You will need 1/2 oz. of string licorice per cupcakes. You will also need 2 or 3 lights per cupcake, which come in a pack of 12, so buy accordingly.
The licorice can wilt and get sticky if left too long in the fridge. We recommend making these no earlier than the night before serving them.
