Ravens are basically the ultimate Halloween symbol, but surprisingly, I’ve realized that not many people around me use them in their baking decorations as much as I thought they would.
So, I figured, well, why not let me be the first? And that’s how my raven silhouette cookies swooped into existence – dark, delicious, and perfect for a haunting treat!
Why These Raven Silhouettes Steal Our Hearts
They are gorgeous pieces of art. You’ll turn a classic sugar cookie base into a sleek, jet-black raven silhouetted against the rustic white background. The stark contrast gives these cookies a gothic charm that’s as mysterious as it is alluring. A sprinkle of black sanding sugar adds a shimmery finish that makes the stunning single-color raven design almost too pretty to eat (but don’t worry, you will!).
Making them is super fun. You know, it’s all about the little details: crafting the perfect white chocolate frames, carefully shaping each tiny raven out of black fondant, and adding just the right touch of cocoa powder for texture. Every cookie becomes its own masterpiece, with a unique twist that reflects your own personal style.
They steal the show everywhere. Who says they’re just for Halloween? Oh no, our little stars can shine at any gathering with their lovely yet eerie elegance – whether a spooky-themed party or a cozy, intimate autumn get-together! These wicked little cookies can be a conversation starter, a centerpiece, a complimentary dish, and many, many more, you name it.
4 Steps to Make Raven Silhouette Cookies
Let’s cut to the chase — no more getting around the bush. Here’s exactly how to make these raven cookies, step by step! Just make sure to grab all these ingredients and tools, and you can start following my guide right away:

Step 1. Bake the Cookies
First things first, it’s cookie time! Grab your trusty football-shaped cookie cutter and whip up some delicious dough using your favorite Sugar Cookie recipe. Roll, cut, and bake those cookies to golden perfection — just imagine the smell filling your kitchen.
Step 2. Make the Frames
Now for the fun part! Melt the white candy coating in the microwave, but keep it on half power and zap it in 30-second bursts. Make sure you stir between each round until it’s silky smooth (don’t rush it, or it’ll burn badly).
Next, spoon a generous dollop of melted coating into each mold and spread it out until it’s just shy of the edges. Give the mold a little tap-tap on the counter to smooth everything out, then pop them in the freezer for about 5 minutes to set. Once they’re firm, flip them out onto a tray and repeat the process until all your frames are done.
When your molds are back to room temp, dust a bit of cocoa powder inside each one to give it a rustic, charming touch. Don’t forget to dust the frame edges, too, for some extra bit of texture.
Step 3. Make the Ravens and Finish the Frames
Finally, let’s move on to the ravens! Carefully cut those Raven templates out with scissors.
Now, on a powdered-sugar-dusted surface, roll out the black fondant until it’s about ⅛ inch thick. Transfer it to a cutting board and grab a craft knife to cut out those little raven shapes, using your templates as a guide. Don’t worry if they’re not perfect; it actually adds to the charm.
After that, lightly brush each raven with a touch of water, and then sprinkle them with sparkly black sanding sugar for a little extra pizzazz. Shake off the excess and flip them over, then brush the back with water and gently place them inside the frames. These little guys are going to look amazing!
Step 4. Assemble
Now, it’s time to bring it all together. Dab a little melted candy coating on the back of each frame and stick it right on top of your baked cookies.
And tada! You’ve just created some stunning, edible art. Enjoy the applause from anyone lucky enough to see (and taste) your masterpiece!
Recipe Notes
- Want to get an even dough? I usually use rolling pin guides or parchment paper to keep your dough at an even thickness. Trust me, this makes sure every cookie comes out looking professional – no rough edges here!
- If you’re using silicone molds for the frames, you’re in luck — they’ll pop right out like a dream. But if you’re stuck with plastic molds, no worries! Just give them a quick spritz with non-stick spray, so you don’t have to wrestle with them later.
- When dusting the frames with cocoa powder, use a fine mesh strainer for a light touch. We’re going for a charming, rustic look, after all – too much cocoa will drown out the vibe.
- Fondants can be a bit fussy, so keep the pieces you’re not working on covered with plastic wrap. It dries out faster than you think! And when you’re rolling it out, a little powdered sugar helps. But don’t go overboard (especially with black fondant); it can dull the color otherwise.
